  • What do Licensed Healthcare Professionals REALLY need to know this year?

Is it that there are estimated to be 421 million annual hospital admissions globally and that 42.7 million adverse events occur in these patients during their hospitalizations? Or is that patient harm is the 14th leading cause of morbidity and mortality across the world? Or, is it that administrative errors account for up to half of ALL medical errors in Primary Care? Or, that 1 in every 10 patients are harmed whilst in hospital. Perhaps we need to know that although use of radiation has improved medical care, overall medical exposure to radiation is a public health and safety concern.
The numbers go on. More than 1 million die annually from surgical complications. 14 out of every 100 patients admitted acquire a preventable healthcare infection. Almost 1% of global expenditure on healthcare is now associated with medication errors. Or is it that at least 5% of patients experience a diagnostic error each year in the Outpatients setting.
Those are scary numbers, they are RED Alerts. No one rational chooses to harm or be harmed; so what do we really need know this RED LEARNING Day? National Association of Healthcare Quality ‘Solutions’ springs to mind, as does Crossing the #GlobalQualityChasm.
THE SOLUTION will be tested when leaders listen to the statistics and to their Healthcare Quality Professionals. 268 Healthcare Quality Professionals recently surveyed have given us some very sage advice in a white paper, “The Road to Healthcare Value is Driven by Quality Workforce Integration”. “Regardless of different structures, geographies and populations served, organizations who become leaders in the future healthcare value economy will employ QUALITY as a growth strategy. They will tie their SUCCESS to it.”
We all want Quality Service from our Healthcare Professionals, even if we are happen to be a Certified Healthcare Quality Professional ourselves. We need value added healthcare, not harmful healthcare; it should be Safe, Timely, Effective, Efficient, Equitable, and Patient-centered. A STEEEP® request, but integrating quality into every healthcare setting and aligning workforce training is a growth strategy we need to build on. What’s stopping you? Why not start your own Quality journey this Red Learning Day.
